Still Life Painting Tutorial
This painting can be broken down
into Hue, Shadows and Highlights.
First I drew an outline of the
fruits and filled it with colour, then using the smudge tool with scattering
turned on, blended between hues to create smooth transitions. Next I added in
some more details in the Hue like spots and patches. I place every new addition
on a different layer as that will allow me to make changes later on. Then I added
the surface of the table and the background.
Next I added the light and shadow
or the Value. On a new layer, I started painting the dark areas of the object
in black and then decreased opacity of the layer till I achieved the desired
level of darkness. Keeping this layer
separate is good practice for beginners so that it does not interfere with the previously
painted colours. To paint the value I used a brush that is set to medium
hardness. Then I used the Smudge brush
with medium hardness and scattering turned on to smoothen out the brush strokes. You can increase hardness of the brush if the painting is too blurry.
Next I added the fine roughness on
the surface. This is nothing but a combination of light and dark values,
painted with a default speckled brush.
Next I added highlights by
painting them in white, then added some noise filter for graininess and to
maintain the rough look of the surface and then blurred it slightly.
Then I painted the light that is
reflected back from the table onto the fruit
I also added a slight reflection
of the fruit on the table.
Next I added the cast shadow. I
have painted it in dark grey with a hard round brush, then blurred it slightly
with gaussian blur and then reduced opacity of the layer.

Digital Painting- Still Life
This is my attempt at still life painting in Photoshop. I experimented with a realistic style in these paintings. This process helped me learn Photoshop as a software as well as develop my painting skills. Since I am a 3d artist, not trained in traditional art, I have used my understanding of 3d rendering in trying to make these paintings. I hope to do a tutorial soon, explaining this process.
